The Toyota 4Runner, along with an entire line of four wheel drive pickups, was known for handling offroad matters with ease and utility. To this day, a used 4Runner in good condition will bring top dollar and they don’t stay on the lot for long.
The early 4WD Toyota pickups had a solid front axle which many offroad enthusiasts wish they came with today. Many are even doing a solid front axle swap on a Toyota 4Runner to bring this rig up to par with the most challenging of trails.
The advantage in owning a Toyota pickup or Toyota 4Runner was you didn’t have to worry about service on a Toyota, so very little work had to be done on them and because of that the Toyota pickups became very well known for their indestructible 22R engine.
