The Legend of Toyota Pickups – 22R

There’s not a person that probably hasn’t heard that Toyota pickups run forever. If you never owned one, you probably won’t be familiar with much of this post, but regardless it’s about the mystery behind this legendary engine.

You can find a bunch of useful facts online including the History of Toyota Pickups on the Toyota website, but few will have what really makes these things tick.

Simply Add Oil And Go

Just like the recipe that says “just add water”, really was that simple with regards to Toyota engines. Keep oil in them and rarely will you need to do much else. Of course there’s the occasional tuneup or filter replacement, but seriously that’s all there was to it.

The Toyota pickup would simply run forever, and not just a few of them, they all did. One of the best things about buying a used Toyota was you just looked at the odometer and if it was within your comfort range then go for it. That’s if you were happy with the exterior because depending on where you lived these trucks were more likely to rust out completely before the engine would give up.

Buying a 22R

Back in the day the 22R engine was indestructible, it was literally impossible to kill this engine. That meant they were gobbled up as soon as they were put for sale. This was primarily because you could buy one for cheap, park it somewhere if you didn’t need it as a daily driver and you’d have the ultimate backup vehicle.

You could go out there after it’d been sitting for months and it would start up as if you’d been driving it everyday. So in terms of how reliable, they were unbeatable. Next up was the offroad capability.

Toyota Pickup Offroad Truck

These trucks were phenomenal offroad, so without any worries under the hood you could get a nice set of tires and get just about anywhere. They did incredible in snow, mud, and would go just about anywhere. Its rare that you’ll find one that’s in good shape these days, but if you do, don’t wait long because theres Toyota pickup snipers everywhere that will snatch em up within hours of them getting posted for sale.

The used 5 speed Toyota Pickups are extremely hard to find with low miles, people would never sell them, so when you do come across one it will almost always retain it’s value meaning you could sell it for what you bought if for after a couple years as long as you didn’t abuse it or put 60,000 additional miles on it.

Hi, my name is Bert, I started drivingToyota trucks since I was 8 years old, (got hooked on my dads truck) he let me drive it on our farm all the time. So, now that I am 29 I only bought Toyota. I own a 82 Toyota and a 99 Tacoma (both 4×4 pickup trucks) and I know these trucks run forever with very low maintenance because I rely on them every day.
Our 82 has the 22R engin and no matter what the conditions are, that truck starts everytime.
I just wanted to say thank you for this blog and it information.
All the best.

Hi. I recently bought my first Toyota. Its actually a 1988 Chevy Nova (Toyota Corolla). The temperature gushed works perfect, but when the engine warms up as normal, I drive the car and the temperature gushed dives all the way down to just above the cold mark. I’ve replaced the water pump, radiator, thermostat and coolant. I can’t figure out why it runs so cold. I pull over and pop the hood and the cylinder head is hot. My friend who has owned Toyota’s his whole life says that is normal. Do you have any advice. Its a 1.6 liter 4A engine.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
